• Do hybrid and electric vehicles have a 12V battery?

  Yes. Most hybrid and electric vehicles use a 12V auxiliary battery alongside their high-voltage traction battery. The auxiliary battery powers or supports many of the vehicle's low-voltage electrical systems, electronics and control systems.

• What does the 12V battery do in a hybrid or electric vehicle?

  The 12V auxiliary battery supplies power to essential low-voltage systems such as vehicle electronics, control modules, security systems and accessories. It also plays an important role in allowing the vehicle's electrical systems to initialise when the vehicle is started.

• Is an EV auxiliary battery the same as the main EV battery?

  No. The large high-voltage traction battery provides energy for vehicle propulsion, while the 12V auxiliary battery supports the vehicle's low-voltage electrical systems. Century Hybrid & EV Auxiliary batteries are designed to replace the 12V auxiliary battery, not the high-voltage traction battery.

• Can I use a normal car battery in a hybrid or electric vehicle?

  You should always fit a battery that meets the vehicle manufacturer's specifications. Hybrid and electric vehicles can have specific auxiliary battery requirements, so a conventional starting battery should not be substituted unless it is specified as suitable for that vehicle.

• Can a hybrid or electric vehicle have a flat 12V battery?

  Yes. Just like a conventional vehicle, the 12V auxiliary battery in a hybrid or electric vehicle can become discharged. If the auxiliary battery has insufficient charge, the vehicle may be unable to initialise its electrical systems even if the high-voltage traction battery is charged.

• Can I charge a Hybrid & EV auxiliary battery with a battery charger?

  In many cases the 12V auxiliary battery can be recharged, but the charger must be suitable for the battery technology fitted to the vehicle. Always follow the vehicle, battery and battery charger manufacturer's instructions before charging.
